San Mateo, CA – A theft suspect was taken into custody after a two-hour standoff in a creek near East Third Avenue and Highway 101 on Thursday afternoon.
The incident began around 1:30 p.m. when San Mateo police responded to reports of a theft at a Walgreens in downtown San Mateo. Upon arrival, officers located the suspect, who fled on foot.
A downtown bicycle officer pursued the suspect as he ran into a creek and entered a tunnel under Highway 101 near Third Avenue. The suspect refused to exit, prompting authorities to escalate their response.
Police deployed a drone and pepper balls into the tunnel in an effort to force the suspect out. A water rescue team was called in to assist, bringing paddle boards to aid in the operation.
After multiple announcements, officers deployed a police canine, which finally convinced the suspect to surrender. He was taken into custody without further incident at approximately 3:30 p.m.
