Jamul, CA – A rapidly expanding fire, known as the Border Fire, has scorched more than 1,000 acres since igniting early Thursday morning, prompting swift evacuations and significant firefighting efforts.
The fire began around 2:30 a.m. on January 24, 2025, along Otay Lakes Road. Moving at a moderate pace, it quickly spread northward, threatening areas like Sky Dive San Diego, which is currently in the fire’s path. As the fire continued to grow, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) closed Otay Lakes Road at Wueste Road in Chula Vista to prevent further traffic in the area.
By 4:30 a.m., the fire had shifted direction, now heading northeast. In response, night-flying helicopters began conducting water drops to contain the blaze. Authorities also evacuated the Pio Pico Campground to the east as a precaution. With shifting winds, ash from the fire has reached surrounding areas, including San Diego, National City, and Chula Vista.
