Whittier, CA , July 15, 2025– A pursuit involving a suspected DUI driver ended dramatically Wednesday night after Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies used a PIT maneuver and pepper balls to bring the incident to a close. The chase began around 8:39 p.m. on July 9, when deputies initiated a pursuit of a reckless driver heading eastbound on Mulberry Drive near Mills Avenue. The vehicle reportedly reached speeds up to 50 miles per hour as it weaved through South Whittier and into Uptown Whittier. Deputies conducted two passing points — first at Comstock Avenue and La Cuarta Street and again at Painter Avenue and Lambert Road — before the suspect was finally stopped with a precision intervention technique (PIT) on westbound Lakeland Road near Norwalk Boulevard in Santa Fe Springs. Despite the vehicle being disabled, the suspect initially refused to exit. Deputies deployed spike strips to prevent a second escape attempt and shattered the rear windshield before firing pepper balls into the vehicle. The chemical agents successfully subdued the suspect, who was then taken into custody without further incident.
