Rialto, CA – A tragic collision in Rialto on Friday night claimed the life of a 33-year-old woman after a suspected drunk driver lost control of his vehicle and fled the scene. The incident occurred at approximately 8:15 p.m. at the intersection of Merrill Avenue and Cactus Avenue.
According to the Rialto Police Department, officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle crash at 8:17 p.m. and arrived on the scene minutes later. Emergency personnel attempted life-saving measures on the passenger, identified as Rachel Martin, a Rialto resident, but she succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced deceased at 8:25 p.m.
The driver, 28-year-old Joshua Cardenas, also a Rialto resident, was behind the wheel of a white 2021 Ford Mustang. Investigators determined he was speeding at over 85 mph eastbound on Merrill Avenue when he lost control at the Cactus Avenue intersection, crashing into multiple trees before his vehicle came to a stop in the westbound lanes.
Cardenas, who suffered only minor injuries, fled the crash site but was quickly identified by witnesses. Authorities later apprehended him and, based on initial evidence, believe he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the accident.
