A high-speed police pursuit ended in tragedy late Saturday night, February 22, 2025, when a fleeing suspect crashed into multiple pedestrians at a bus stop in Commerce, killing one man and injuring three others.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), officers were pursuing a dark red sedan northbound on Garfield Avenue near Florence Avenue in Bell Gardens. As the suspect vehicle approached Eastern Avenue near Randolph, CHP called off the chase after the driver ran a red light at speeds exceeding 100 mph. Moments later, officers reported that they believed the suspect had crashed.
Witnesses at the scene stated that the suspect’s vehicle rear-ended a white car stopped at a red light, causing the impact to propel the red sedan onto the sidewalk, where it struck four pedestrians. Among the victims was a homeless man who regularly slept at the bus stop, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three victims—women waiting for the bus—sustained injuries and were rushed to a nearby hospital.
